Why is MMI focused on efforts in Turkey?
Turkey, with its booming economy and lax visa requirements, (any person can enter the country with a $10 visa) is becoming the world's largest market for trafficked Slavic women, one of the most visible exports from struggling former Soviet states. "Women are recruited at home with the promise of (conventional) employment," said Allan Freedman. "Once they are across the border their passports are taken away and they are beaten and raped and forced into prostitution." Read more from the International Herald Tribune.

What will MMI do?
There are currently only two "safe homes" in all of Turkey that rescued victims can be sent to. Each has approximately 12 beds. MMI would like to establish a "safe home" (guvenli ev in Turkish) built for women and children who have been victims of human trafficking.
The safe home will be focused on meeting the needs of the whole person; physically, mentally and spiritually. Steps of rehabilitation will include professional medical care, licensed counseling, job skills training, and career services that encourage a healthy, full life.
